About Hero Squad!

Strap on your bulletproof vest… It’s time to kill some “red dudes”!I can’t recall the many times I’ve rolled my eyes looking at these so-called “Unity games”. Not to diss the game engine itself – which helped produce gaming jewels such as Among Us or Cupcake – but I’m specifically referring to a new stream of games that were made using some of the most basic functions of the engine and deployed with little effort.

Hero Squad! (it’s not a Marvel game – just getting that out of the way!) is a slightly more refined version of what I described above. You’re able to tell by the backdrop design and the blank slate characters. However, I must say that I was mildly enthralled by the level of polish this game exhibited from time to time. To illustrate, the playable characters look surprisingly detailed and thought-out.

But then I look at the “enemies” – I’m not sure what they are exactly… zombies, perchance? -and I get reminded that this is still one of those games. I was hopeful that this title would surprise me in a good way but I was left unimpressed by the end of the day.

You launch the game and are immediately met with a very underwhelming title screen. What’s with the eyes? Why do they look so creepy? I do like the Lego-type bodies, I must admit. But the eyes really irk me. Geez!

Then, we have the menu, which is already a thing of freaking legend! Oh, and those transparent popups truly do enhance usability (:sarcasm). Joking aside, at some moments, the UI appears gorgeous in terms of presentation and animations (such as when you open a crate) but, for the most part, it left me with a sour aftertaste.

The gameplay UI (the one that appears when playing the actual game) is not bad, but nothing special. As said earlier, the playable characters are decent-looking and I like some details such as the props and certain backdrops found later in the game, though the ones at the beginning were atrocious (or basically non-existent).

Now, you may be asking: “Why are you focusing so much on graphics? Gameplay should definitely make up for visual deficiencies, right?” Well… about that, it was not exactly good either. I’m not sure if the developers actually play-tested this game, but I found it way too easy, to the point where I was basically just going with the motions, at times not even looking at the screen!

Some moments did present some semblance of a challenge, such as when I was introduced to the grenade launchers or the guys with shields. However, their actions were so slow that they could be easily telegraphed. Even that skirmish with the Mecha robot at the end was heavily uninspiring (it was a good-looking robot, though).

This brings me to another complaint, which is the lack of enemy variety. Apart from the larger red “people” and the boss, there was hardly anything else worth highlighting. This is just one more negative aspect among a plethora of others.

And don’t even get me started on the monetization strategy. Do you want to unlock all the characters? Prepare to pay two figures for that. VIP access? You must pay a weekly fee (that’s right, weekly) of roughly $7. I would not spend that incredibly copious amount a week for this game even if I got mentioned in Forbes magazine. I got it, it’s entirely optional, but it’s still a bit overkill in my opinion.

If you want to get rid of ads (which show even if you beat the level and don’t want a reward) you’d have to pay close to $4.  It’s not too much, but I’ve seen better deals than that for far more rewarding games.

I was probably too harsh on Hero Squad! To be honest, this game, when compared to many other generic “Unity games” on the market, does attempt to usher in a more quality experience for players.  Alas, it still fails to fully deliver due to its repetitiveness and general lack of challenge, along with a generous share of bugs. I’d suggest you look for other alternatives and give this one a pass, at least until the devs sort out some of these issues.
