Candy Crush: Soda Saga Description

If you ask a serious match-3 fan what the best match-3 game is, there’s a pretty good chance they’ll say that their favorite is Candy Crush: Soda Saga. Candy Crush: Soda Saga isn’t the newest game on the market (it’s been out since 2014), but it’s got subtle yet powerful twists to the classic match-3 gameplay that make the experience better. Whether you’re a match-3 master or you’re totally new to the genre, Candy Crush: Soda Saga is a great place to start.

Match-3 games involve a board that’s filled with numerous square tiles in different colors. On each of your turns, your goal is to switch the location of two adjacent tiles to produce groups of three or more tiles of the same color and shape. When you make a group of similar tiles, they all vanish, giving you points. Tiles from nearby squares rush in to fill their empty locations, giving you a new board of tiles of different shapes and sizes.

Candy Crush: Soda Saga plays with food-based themes for its twists and objectives. The first mode involves popping soda bottles to increase the level of soda in the background. Matching tiles above the soda causes new tiles to fall in from the top while matching tiles below the soda causes new tiles to float up from below. Once the level of soda reaches the top of the level, you’re rewarded with a victory screen and the next challenge.

The second mode involves gummy bears trapped in frosting. Match tiles near blocks of frosting to find the trapped gummy bears, then match tiles above the gummy bears so they can make their way to safety. The third mode, honey mode, also involves matching tiles in specific places. These objectives help guide your play and make each level feel different than the one before.

Soda Saga introduces a new type of powerup: the Swedish Fish. These gummies need to be matched with either matching tiles or other powerups, but their effects are pretty big. If you match them with similar tiles, it’ll float to a section of tiles and knock them out. The big twist here is that the fish seems to home in on tiles that are useful to eliminate, making it easier to beat the level. If you combine it with a powerup, it’ll do the same thing, allowing you to use your striped candies or color bombs on the ideal squares, no matter where on the board they started.

Soda Saga is monetized in a way that was aggressive for 2014, but these days it seems tame and fair. Every so often, you regenerate a “life,” up to 5. As long as you don’t fail levels, you can keep playing forever. Fail a level and you’ll lose a life. This means that the game rewards careful play, with lots of forethought before you make each move. If you want more lives, you can always share the game on Facebook.

Candy Crush: Soda Saga might very well be the best match-3 game on the market, even today. It’s simple, it’s got great gameplay twists, and the monetization isn’t terribly intrusive. While you’ll have to take a break every once in a while on particularly hard levels, it’s a great way to spend some time. If you hate match-3 games, however, this probably isn’t the app for you.

The first key to beating Candy Crush: Soda Saga is to never give up. The game will force you to take a break sometimes, and that’s okay. When you come back, you’ll have a clear head and you can try new strategies to beat the level.

When it comes to matching pieces, be sure to think ahead and play carefully. In general, match tiles as far away from the source of new tiles as you can. Be sure to save your lollipop hammers and other goodies for levels where you need them, and look out for opportunities to make special candies. With a bit of practice, you’ll be clearing levels like an expert!
